Hi there!

Recently LEVEL-DESIGN.org was getting very close to being shut down. The reason behind the decision to stop working on the website was simple: I cannot dedicate more funds and time to the website maintenance. On the other hand, it would be a shame to get rid of such a rich knowledge and reference base. This website is functioning since 2009. It’s already 8 years. Instead of closing down the page, I decided to come up with changes.

I found a way to dedicate more time to the website, getting new layout and logos, create own content that will bring huge value to the visitors and get more regular updates but the he funding part was hard to bypass. Patreon came with great tools that may help here. I decided to ask for support from you guys – people that are can support LEVEL-DESIGN.org.

I decided to run a Patreon page. For those who don’t know what it is: Patreon lets people donate few dollars per month to a person that creates content for them. LEVEL-DESIGN.org Patreon page can be found here:

LEVEL-DESIGN.org already has 4 patrons (woohoo, thank you!) and it’s getting close to get funds for the servers and domain! There are no rewards yet but I’ll figure something out soon. Currently, your donation is a reward for me. Feel free to ask me about anything design-related. I hope I can help you. I owe you that and I appreciate that you found my “work” on this website useful. Thank you very much! For me, this is a different kind of motivation, it’s way stronger because I don’t want to let you down and waste your hard earned money.

Cheers!

Level Design Analysis Videos – LEVEL-DESIGN.org YouTube Channel

The idea of introducing video content to LEVEL-DESIGN.org was bugging me for a long time. I wanted to share my industry experience, thoughts and design knowledge with a bigger audience but my biggest concern was my English. My native language is Polish but to get a bigger audience, I cannot go with Polish voice plus English subtitles. I decided to try speaking in English, we’ll see how it goes. It won’t be aired live so I’ll be able to prepare the talk before recording, record again etc. When first videos will be aired, let me know what do you think. Also, sorry in advance for butchering this cool language.

During November I’ll begin with publishing first Level Design Analysis Videos in which I’ll be breaking down levels’ core structure and principles that were driving the design process. I’d really like to have Half-Life 2 to be the first analysed title. I’ll focus on believability, world design, telling story only through gameplay, subtle teaching of the core mechanics introductions, a bit of Source Engine history and many more. Here’s a link:

LD.org Reference Database – November Update

Comments Off on LD.org Reference Database – November Update

During recent months I managed to gather reference shots from 15 games. That’s quite a nice number but the last update was almost a year ago… Anyway,  below you can find a list of recent album updates.

LEVEL-DESIGN.org Reference Database Updates:

Alien: Isolation is quite scary but the album will be updated with more screenshots very soon. Borderlands 2 got more screenshots and it’s done for now. Firewatch album is completed with full walkthrough. I’ll definitely get more screenshots from Prey too!

LEVEL-DESIGN.org News Roundup – Volume 42

Comments Off on LEVEL-DESIGN.org News Roundup – Volume 42

Hello!

It’s starting to be a tradition to post news every few months. I’d love to post more but I literally have no time, even for “patrolling” the websites where interesting level art or design content might appear. Anyway, I’m looking for contributors so if you have a bit of time and you’re checking some game dev websites regularly, swing by my email and let me know if you got any interesting design stuff. Maybe there’s a way we could post it here.

Second thing is that I’m looking for a better website engine, something like a simple Article Directory with tags, categories, latest updates page etc. do you know any?

One more thing! I’ve created a LEVEL-DESIGN.org Steam group. Feel free to join!

Cheers and enjoy the update, thanks for showing up on the website! :)

LEVEL-DESIGN.org Knowledge Base Is Now Available!

Comments Off on LEVEL-DESIGN.org Knowledge Base Is Now Available!

LEVEL-DESIGN.org Knowledge Base was created to gather Level Art & Design links and resources from around the web in a certain categories. To make search easier, the list of categories is built around the typical Level Design process. This page is constantly under development. New categories and new links will appear after each LEVEL-DESIGN.org News Roundup post!

Knowledge Base can be found here and as a second link on the website’s menu.

Enjoy and have fun!

What’s up with LEVEL-DESIGN.org?

Comments Off on What’s up with LEVEL-DESIGN.org?

Hello fellow designers and artists!

No links this time, only a short but very important note about the website. As you can see, page got a new look and the Knowledge Base is almost ready to open. There’s a link to the Knowledge Base in the top menu but it’s not yet opened. The content grows of the page each day and you might got some RSS spam recently because of that. Sorry for that, it’s already fixed and should be fine. Visuals will also get some touches here and there in the future so stay tuned.

All the website changes are slowly getting there but there’s a small problem. This page takes a lot of my private time and people ask for more and more. It collides with my free time that I want to spend with my family but I have a plan! The “Knowledge Base” page idea that I described in my previous Roundup will be the main source of Level Ar & Design links. Each post with one link will be assigned to a specific category that fits to the level design process or principles. I’d no longer had to write one huge Roundup post but each link would get a separate post and category. Sadly, there will be no additional description. For me, it will save a lot of time. How it works for you? Let me know if you care and actually read this announcement :)

LEVEL-DESIGN.org News Roundup – Volume 40

Comments Off on LEVEL-DESIGN.org News Roundup – Volume 40

Hello! Welcome to Volume 40 of the LEVEL-DESIGN.org News Roundup. Few posts ago I’ve announced a small change on the website. I’m still struggling with finding a proper website engine to handle my vision of the new website. I’d like to share some thoughts with you and please, let me know what do you think. Without further ado, here’s the idea. How about changing the LEVEL-DESIGN.org main page to a list of categories? Each category would be a step in a level design process or a principle of design. After opening the category, you’ll be able to see a list of all the resources on this topic. For example, by clicking on “Prototype” category, you’ll be able to see all the resources I’ve found about level prototyping. Please, send me your ideas, concerns and thoughts to mateusz.piaskiewicz@level-design.org. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Volume 39 of the LEVEL-DESIGN.org News Roundup. This time there’s really a lot of Level Design & Art stuff, enjoy! I’ve also listed two podcasts in this update, that’s new for the News Roundup. I’ll try to get more of these but usually there’s not much about Level Design or stuff related to it. If you got or know any cool podcasts, please, let me know!
